He is the Director of the “Internal Medicine and Alcohol Related Disease” Unit at Catholic University of Rome, and senior consultant of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases at Catholic University of Rome.
His research interests include pharmacology and neurobiology of alcohol use disorders including therapeutics and treatment and alcohol liver disease. It has lectured at several international meetings and received numerous prizes.
He has published more than 700 publications. They include more than 290 publications in peer reviewed journals (H index: 56) as Lancet, Molecular Psychiatry, Journal of Hepatology, American Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Journal of Internal Medicine, Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
He is associate Editor of “Alcologia: European Journal of Alcohol Studies” and member of the Editorial Board of “World Journal of Gastroenterology”, “Alcohol & Alcoholism”, “European Addiction Research”, “Journal of Addiction”, “Journal of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence”, “World Journal of Hepatology”.
He was a Member of the European Research Advisory Board (ERAB) (2006-2018).

Medicine at the University of Helsinki, Specialist in Addiction Medicine and Past President of

interests span medical education, clinical supervision, behavioral addictions and neuropharmacology.
Notably, Professor Alho's team was among the first to prove that targeted naltrexone treatment effectively reduces alcohol consumption, pioneering alcohol use disorders (AUD) therapies across Scandinavia. Currently, he serves as the coordinating primary investigator for a controlled clinical trial evaluating psilocybin for AUD treatment. He has published over 240 original research articles alongside several textbooks on medical education and neuroscience.
